Exploring the Rich History and Charm of Alcañiz
Located in the Bajo Aragón region of Spain, Alcañiz is a captivating city that boasts a rich history and a vibrant atmosphere. As the capital and second most populated city in the province of Teruel, Alcañiz offers visitors a range of exciting attractions and experiences to delve into. In this article, we will explore the key highlights of this enchanting destination.
1. Church of Santa María la Mayor de Alcañiz
A must-visit attraction in Alcañiz is the Church of Santa María la Mayor de Alcañiz. This impressive church, characterized by its large size and striking baroque style, leaves visitors in awe. The construction of the temple took 21 years to complete and features an exquisite fault line. While the interior of the church resembles the Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar in Zaragoza, unfortunately, it was closed during our visit. Nonetheless, the exterior alone is a sight to behold.
2. Plaza de España
One of the most charming spots in Alcañiz is the Plaza de España. Serving as the city's nerve center, this square is home to the Town Hall and the Lonja. The Alcañiz Town Hall, built in the 16th century in the Aragonese Renaissance style, showcases architectural beauty. Located adjacent to the Town Hall is the Gothic Lonja, which adds a medieval touch to the complex. Architects took inspiration from the Florentine Renaissance style while designing the buildings, creating a unique blend of influences.

3. Excavated Alcañiz Passageways
Delve into the underground history of Alcañiz by exploring the excavated passageways beneath the Plaza de España. These passageways lead to a magnificent vaulted room that served as a refrigerator during medieval times. People used to store snow and ice there to preserve food, medicine, and refreshing beverages. The passageways cover a significant portion of the city's subsoil and offer a fascinating glimpse into its past.
4. Palacio Ardid
As you stroll down the main street of Alcañiz, you will come across Palacio Ardid. This architectural gem, located near the remaining sections of the city's walls, bears witness to the historical passage of the Guadalope River through the city. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and heritage of this landmark.
5. Fuente de los 72 Caños
In the picturesque Telmo Lacasa park, also known as the Prado, you will discover the Fuente de los 72 Caños. Legend has it that during a severe drought in Alcañiz, a pilgrimage was organized, leading the residents to a she-wolf. The she-wolf guided them to a fountain, where they found much-needed water. This gave rise to the fountain's original name, "lupine fountain." This legend adds a touch of enchantment to the city's history.

6. Castillo de los Calatravos
Perched atop the hill of Pui Pinos, the Castillo de los Calatravos offers breathtaking panoramic views of Alcañiz. Currently housing the national Parador, this castle has a fascinating history. It has been associated with the Order of the Calatravas, who exerted their authority over the territory from the 12th to the 19th century. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the castle's pro-Gothic cloister, Romanesque chapel, and parts of the Palace of the Commanders. To arrange a visit, simply head to the tourist office.
