Suances: Exploring a Historic Coastal Town

Suances, a picturesque town located in the region of Cantabria, has a rich history and is now a popular tourist destination known for its stunning beaches. Nestled along the Suances estuary, where the Saja and Besaya rivers meet before flowing into the Cantabrian Sea, the town is surrounded by picturesque cliffs, including the famous Punta del Dichoso. While Suances may not be renowned for its historical landmarks, it offers a charming old town, beautiful viewpoints, and delicious local cuisine.

Exploring the Old Town and Architecture

The old town of Suances is divided into two distinct areas: the upper part, where the historic center is located, and the lower part, which encompasses the harbor and urban beaches. Although the town does not have many ancient buildings, a notable one is the Casa de los Polanco, a 17th-century house that is unfortunately not open to the public. On the other hand, visitors can admire the town's more modern architectural gem, the Ayuntamiento de Suances, constructed in the late 19th century in an eclectic style. Another landmark, though in a state of ruin, is the Quinta del Amo, an English-style house from the same period. It's worth noting that this house is a symbol of Suances due to its location next to the famous viewpoint, Mirador de la Quinta, which offers breathtaking views of the town and its natural surroundings.

Religious Architecture and Cultural Heritage

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de las Lindes, built in the 17th century on the remains of a medieval temple, is the town's most significant religious monument. Nearby, visitors can also see the walls that once surrounded the now-defunct Convent of Las Trinitarias, also from the 17th century, which is now declared a Cultural Heritage site. Another notable religious building is the Capilla de la Virgen del Carmen, constructed in the early 20th century in a Neo-Gothic style.

A Stroll Through Barrio de la Cuba

A visit to Suances would not be complete without taking a leisurely walk through Barrio de la Cuba, the old fishing district. This neighborhood exudes a traditional maritime atmosphere and offers charming views of the estuary. It is also home to three panoramic viewpoints that provide stunning vistas of the surrounding area. Visitors can take a shortcut from the Bajada de la Fuente de Medio viewpoint, which leads to the lower part of town where the harbor and the main urban beaches are located.

Beach Escapades

Suances boasts several beautiful and diverse beaches that attract vacationers from far and wide. La Ribera is a tranquil beach along the San Martín estuary, measuring 120 meters in length and ideal for families with small children. Close by is Playa de la Concha, a bustling urban beach with a kilometer-long stretch of fine golden sand and moderate waves. It has been awarded multiple tourism certificates for its excellent facilities and cleanliness.

Punta del Dichoso, a peninsula adjacent to Playa de la Concha, features the iconic Punta del Turco lighthouse and remains of the ancient Torco defensive system, which now houses art galleries and summer courses by the University of Cantabria. On the other side of Punta del Dichoso lies Playa de los Locos, the wildest and most spectacular beach in Suances. This beach, known for its strong waves, is popular among surfers and holds the title of a Surfing Reserve. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the Mirador at the highest point of Punta del Dichoso, next to the statue of Los Vientos and the Suances Castle, which has been converted into a hotel.

Finally, the Playa del Sable, also known as Playa de Tagle, is the furthest beach from the town center. It is tucked between towering cliffs and is presided over by the Torre de Sant Elmo on Punta Bellota.
