Discovering Salamanca

Welcome to "Qué ver en el mundo" (What to see in the world) where we will accompany you to explore Salamanca, a city declared a World Heritage Site. Some of the city's main buildings are located around Plaza de Anaya. On one side, you will find the Palacio de Anaya, the former Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé, and just in front of it is the New Cathedral of Salamanca.

Salamanca actually has two cathedrals: the Old Cathedral in Romanesque style and the New Cathedral in Gothic style. Although both buildings are overlapping, the monumental facades with their abundant iconography stand out within the complex. The Torre del Gallo, included in the set of Duero symbols, and the Torre de las Campanas, one of the tallest in Spain, are also must-visit sites.

One cannot miss the University of Salamanca, the oldest university in Spain. Surrounding the Patio de Escuelas are the Escuelas Menores, the Hospital del Estudio, and the Escuelas Mayores, the three main buildings of the university. Undoubtedly, the monumental Plateresque facade of the Escuelas Mayores is the main attraction of the complex, where everyone strives to find the small image of the lucky frog. It is a symbol of Salamanca.

The city's civil life revolves around Plaza Mayor, considered one of the most beautiful and harmonious squares in Spain. Furthermore, it is the center of popular celebrations and the ideal place to taste traditional cuisine. Local gastronomy is known for its Iberian sausages and Guijuelo ham, which are the highlights of the cuisine. For example, the hornazo de Salamanca, a traditional pie made with these products, is the star of local gastronomy.

Halfway between the cathedrals of Salamanca and Plaza Mayor, you will find two of the city's most emblematic buildings. First, Casa de las Conchas, an urban accent decorated with more than 300 shells and the Maldonado family's coats of arms. Around its central courtyard, the public library's rooms are distributed. Second, the Clerecía, the former church and college of the Society of Jesus or Jesuits of the Pontifical University of Salamanca.

Through the streets and squares of the city, a good number of churches and monasteries are preserved, highlighting the Convent of San Esteban with its monumental Plateresque facade. The Convent of the Annunciation or Convent of the Ursulines, with its unique Gothic apse, is also worth mentioning. Just in front, there is the Casa de las Muertes, a 16th-century palace surrounded by dark legends, with several skulls decorating its facades. Next to it is the Casa del Regidor or Valle, where Miguel de Unamuno lived and died. Very close to these buildings, you will find the Palacio de Monterrey, a jewel of Plateresque style that is currently owned by the Casa de Alba.

In front of the Convent of the Augustinians and the Church of the Purísima, in the hustle and bustle of the historic center, you can visit a very peaceful and romantic corner. It is the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea, where the famous tragicomedy "La Celestina" took place. In addition to strolling through its gardens, you can enjoy wonderful views of the city from here.

One of the best views of Salamanca is obtained from the Roman Bridge, which was built over 2000 years ago and served as a mandatory crossing point for the important Via de la Plata, which connected Merida and Astorga. Next to it is the Toro de Salamanca or Verraco del Puente, a stone sculpture carved by a pre-Roman people. From here, you can also admire the stained glass windows of Casa Lis, which has been converted into a museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. You can also see the ruins of the wall and visit the Cueva de Salamanca, surrounded by a dark legend associated with it.
