Exploring the Enchanting Forest of Code in Cantabria

Welcome to a new adventure through the charming region of Cantabria in northern Spain. Today, we will be exploring the mesmerizing forest of Code, located just 5 km from the town of Los Corrales de Buelna. This forest is famous for its enchanted atmosphere and is home to one of the most popular hiking trails in the area.

The Castañal Hiking Trail

Our journey begins at the recreational area of Code, where we meet our enthusiastic companions for the day. We start our hike towards the castañal, a forest abundant with chestnut trees, known for its stunning beauty. The trail is considered to be of moderate difficulty, making it suitable for families and beginner hikers.

As we ascend, we can see our friend Maruchi already feeling challenged by the steepness of the path. The initial 2 km are quite demanding, but the breathtaking views and the promise of reaching the top keep us motivated. Along the way, we pass by a sign indicating that the total distance of the hike is 9 km, with a 4.5 km ascent and an equal descent.

Finally, after a challenging climb, we reach the summit of Montede Ko, standing at an elevation of 372 meters. From here, we can admire the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. We take a moment to capture the beauty of the forest and share it on our Instagram page before continuing our journey.

The Code Forest

Once we reach the top, we find an old sign indicating the convergence of two hiking trails – the Castañal route, which descends to the right, and the Montzagro route, which extends 12 km further. However, since we have chosen the 9 km hike, we decide to leave the Montzagro route for another day.

The Code Forest covers an area of 1500 hectares and is filled with oak, holm oak, and holly trees. However, it is the presence of chestnut trees that has attracted us to this particular area. The forest is known for its delicious chestnuts, and we can't resist the temptation to gather a few as souvenirs.

Cantabrian Delicacies

After enjoying the wonders of the Code Forest, we head back to the starting point, and now it's time to indulge in some traditional Cantabrian cuisine. We make our way to Casa Nori, a local restaurant renowned for its authentic dishes.

One of the highlights of Cantabrian cuisine is the cocido montañés, a hearty stew made with beans, cabbage, pork, and other local ingredients. As we fill our stomachs with this delicious meal, we can't help but admire the stunning views from the restaurant, which overlook the Monte Ibio and Mazcuerras regions.

Overall, our adventure through the enchanting forest of Code has been a memorable experience. From the breathtaking views and challenging hike to the delicious local cuisine, Cantabria offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and gastronomic delights.
