This small town offers three running routes, and we will be exploring part of Route 2, also known as the Coastal Route, which spans 8 kilometers with low difficulty and zero incline. Perfect for running!
Exploring the Coastal Route
As we embark on the Coastal Route, we begin our journey along Paseo de Carril, where we are greeted with breathtaking views of the ría. Not only does this route provide a great running path, but it also offers a unique opportunity to delve into the history of the city.
Throughout the centuries, Mila García has witnessed the presence of various civilizations, including the Greeks, Phoenicians, Celts, Romans, Normans, and Moors. However, the actual town of Vila García was founded in the 12th century in an area known as área longa, where the Santa Eulalia church is now located. The town has seen different dominations and territorial boundaries before evolving into what it is today. Its name has changed multiple times, from "área longa" to "ciudad de Rosa" to "carril" before finally settling on "Vila García."
Discover Narón: A Progressive City Blending Tradition and InnovationOne theory suggests that the name "área longa" was derived from the natural environment surrounding the town, as it was once a small sandy tongue that closed a wide coastal inlet. Another theory links the name to the worship of Santa Eulalia de la Longa, a saint who is still venerated today. The origins of the name "Vila García" can be traced back to the years 910 and 1458 when the "área longa" region was donated on multiple occasions. In 1458, García Camaño Elhermoso, the founder of Villa García, donated the region to the San Martín Binario monastery of Santiago.
In the year 1500, the town of "carril" was established with a thriving port, which became one of the best in Galicia, receiving ships from America and England. However, Mila García's growth was hindered by the construction of a railway and other maritime developments, causing it to lose its prominence. In 1869, there was a proposal to unite the municipalities under the name "carril," but this did not come to fruition.
Mila García has a rich historical background, having been the first Galician city to rise against the Napoleonic invasion in 1808. The sword on the city's coat of arms commemorates this heroic event. It wasn't until the early 20th century that Mila García, Pila, Joan, and Carril became a single municipality.
