Burgos: Unveiling the Treasures of Castilla y León
Discovering the City of Burgos
Welcome to "What to See in the World"! Join us as we explore Burgos, a city known since the Middle Ages as the "Cabeza de Castilla" (Head of Castile). Today, it boasts one of the most important monumental ensembles in Spain. The main monument of the city is the Cathedral of Santa María de Burgos, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Aside from its evident exterior beauty, the monumental complex is home to the Chapel of the Constables, the Golden Staircase, which leads to the Royal Door, and the Renaissance dome under which lies the tomb of El Cid Campeador and his wife, Doña Jimena. Next to the cathedral, you can find the Arc of Santa María, the most important of the twelve ancient gates of the city walls in Burgos. Its appearance resembles a medieval castle, decorated with the images of some of the most illustrious figures in the city's history. Inside, there is an interesting collection dedicated to El Cid Campeador.
Parallel to the Arlanzón River, you will find the Paseo del Espolón, one of the most picturesque and busy places in Burgos. Among its points of interest are the statues of the four kings and the music temple. It is also surrounded by some of the city's most important civil buildings, such as the Consulate of the Sea, the Circle of the Union, and the main theater. Another civil building of great interest is the Casa del Cordón or Palace of the Constables of Castile, which has been the setting for important historical events, such as the wedding of the son of the Catholic Monarchs and Princess Margarita, and the meeting of his parents with Christopher Columbus after his second voyage to America.
Unveiling Valladolid: Exploring the Charm and Culture of Central SpainAt the end of the Paseo del Espolón is Plaza del Mío Cid, where a statue of El Cid Campeador marks the end of the route following in his footsteps in Burgos. His sword points towards the San Pablo Bridge, where the statues of his closest family and friends can be found. On the other side of the river is the Museum of Human Evolution, where archaeological remains found in the Atapuerca sites are preserved and exhibited.
Another point of interest is the Plaza Mayor de Burgos, the social center of the city. Here, you can find the City Hall of Burgos, surrounded by colorful buildings with shops and restaurants on the ground floor. It is one of the best places to take a break on your journey and savor the traditional cuisine of the city, which was named the Spanish Gastronomy Capital in 2013. The renowned Burgos cheese and morcilla (blood sausage) are some of the typical gastronomic products. The olla podrida (a hearty stew) and Castilian roasted meats are among the most popular dishes, while the yemas de Burgos (egg yolks) and el postre del abuelo (grandfather's dessert) are perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth.
Exploring Burgos' Churches
Burgos is also home to several churches that showcase the Gothic style. A Gothic route will lead you to the Church of San Esteban, which is now a museum of altarpieces, the Church of San Gil Abad with the city's second most important monumental ensemble, and lastly, the Church of San Nicolás de Bari, located outside the historic center on one of the highest points of the city.
