Located in the mountains of Polio de Seana, there are funerary mounds of pastoral peoples discovered in the 1960s. There are also important fortresses like Ladre or Con, which may be the oldest settlement in Mieres. Mieres is a valley, a river, and a road. It is the entry point from the plateau to the rest of Asturias. Throughout history, Mieres has always been linked to this road, which had bridges and Roman passageways. Roman vestiges were found in the late 19th century in one of the best quarries in Asturias. There are even one of the best preserved Roman inscriptions in Spain found in the collection of four stone tablets, of which three are in the Archaeological Museum.

Mieres was a mandatory stop on the way to the plateau. The famous writer and philosopher Jovellanos, who had good friends in the Camposagrado Palace, would stop in Mieres on his way to Oviedo. The road through Mieres was also taken by the French during the War of Independence. The first shot of the war was fired in the town of Mieres, in front of the Camposagrado Palace. Mieres, as a town, grew when the townships of Union and Villa merged through the urban planning of the villa. The town hall was built in the no man's land, halfway between the villa and Union. From there, Mieres began to grow following a grid pattern, similar to the layout of a large city.

The development of the railway also had an impact on the growth of Mieres. The initial plan was to build the railway through the middle of Mieres, but the local merchants foresaw that this would hinder the town's development and demanded that it be built on the other side of the river. Coal and iron brought life to the area from the mid-19th century until the mid-20th century, when Mieres had a population of 75,000.
